Information we collect
Depending on how you use Islam Academy, we may process the following categories of information.
Account information
Email address, internal user identifier, username, display name and authentication information necessary to create and secure your account.
Profile information
Username, display name and, where available, profile image or avatar.
Learning and saved content
Content that you choose to bookmark or save and, where you have explicitly enabled personalised religious features, your current saved Quran reading position, together with the identifiers necessary to associate those choices with your account.
Communications
Your email address and the contents of messages you send to our contact, support, privacy or security addresses.
Technical information
Session identifiers, authentication cookies and technical information generated in connection with the operation and security of the service. Our infrastructure providers may also process technical logs, such as connection information and IP addresses, as necessary to provide and secure their services.
How we use your information
- create, authenticate and manage your Islam Academy account;
- provide profile and personalised account functionality;
- allow you to save and manage bookmarks;
- for signed-in members who explicitly enable personalised religious features, remember the Quran verse where you stopped so you can resume reading;
- send account confirmation, password recovery and security-related emails;
- respond to support, privacy, security and other communications;
- maintain the availability, integrity and security of Islam Academy;
- prevent abuse and investigate technical or security incidents;
- comply with applicable legal obligations.
Legal bases for processing
The legal basis depends on the purpose for which the information is processed.
- Performance of a contract or steps requested by you before entering into a contract, where processing is necessary to create your account and provide requested account functionality.
- Legitimate interests, where necessary to operate, secure and protect Islam Academy, respond to communications and prevent abuse, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Legal obligations, where processing is required by applicable law.
- Consent, including explicit consent where applicable to information that may reveal special categories of personal data.
Religious information and sensitive data
Islam Academy is a platform dedicated to Islamic educational content. Merely visiting Islam Academy does not necessarily disclose a person's religious beliefs.
However, certain information associated with an identifiable account — including saved religious content and a saved Quran reading position — may in some circumstances reveal or allow inferences about a user's religious interests, practices or beliefs.
Islam Academy therefore stores these personalised religious records only after the signed-in member actively enables the relevant personalised features. Where such processing constitutes processing of special category data under applicable law, Islam Academy will rely on an applicable legal exception, including explicit consent where required.
You may withdraw that consent from your account settings. When you do so, Islam Academy deletes your saved bookmarks and Quran reading position and stops storing new personalised religious records unless you later enable the features again.
Service providers and recipients
Islam Academy relies on third-party technology services to operate the platform.
These providers receive or process information only to the extent relevant to the services they provide or as otherwise permitted by applicable law.
International transfers
Some service providers used by Islam Academy operate internationally and may process personal data outside the European Economic Area.
Where applicable, transfers are subject to recognised data-transfer mechanisms and safeguards required under applicable data-protection law, such as adequacy decisions or contractual safeguards.
Islam Academy's Supabase project is currently hosted in the eu-central-2 (Zurich, Switzerland) region.
How long we keep information
We do not intend to retain personal information indefinitely. Retention depends on the purpose of the processing.
Your data-protection rights
Subject to the conditions of applicable law, you may have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- correct inaccurate or incomplete personal data;
- request deletion of your personal data;
- request restriction of certain processing;
- object to processing based on legitimate interests;
- receive certain information in a portable format where the right to data portability applies;
- withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent, without affecting processing carried out before withdrawal.
You may withdraw personalised religious-data consent or permanently delete your Islam Academy account from your account settings. You may also exercise your rights by contacting:
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent data-protection authority. In France, this is the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL).
Children and teenagers
Islam Academy currently allows users aged 15 years or older to create their own account.
We do not currently provide an account-creation process designed to obtain or verify parental authorisation for users under 15. Users under 15 should therefore not create an Islam Academy account at this stage.
This policy may change in the future if Islam Academy introduces a dedicated experience and appropriate safeguards for younger users.
Security
Islam Academy uses technical and organisational safeguards intended to protect personal information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, loss or misuse.
Account-related database access is restricted through access-control policies so authenticated users can access only the account information made available to them.
Security concerns may be reported to:
Automated decision-making
Islam Academy does not currently make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on users solely through automated processing.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
Islam Academy may update this Privacy Policy when the platform, its features, service providers or legal obligations change.
The current version and its last-updated date will remain available on this page. Where a change materially affects how personal information is processed, additional notice may be provided where appropriate.
