Imam al-Bukhari

الإمام البخاري

Abu Abd Allah

Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (194–256 AH / 810–870 CE) was one of the most influential hadith scholars of the third Islamic century. Born in Bukhara, he travelled widely through the major centers of hadith learning and studied with authorities including Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ali ibn al-Madini. His al-Jami al-Sahih, widely known as Sahih al-Bukhari, became within mainstream Sunni scholarship the most highly regarded hadith collection alongside Sahih Muslim. Its main musnad corpus was deliberately restricted to reports meeting stringent criteria, while its chapter headings also contain suspended reports, Companion material and legal reasoning that must be distinguished from that core. Traditional reports that he selected from 600,000 hadiths are preserved as biographical claims rather than treated as a modern verified count. His al-Tarikh al-Kabir and related works also made him a major authority in narrator criticism. He died near Samarkand in 256 AH / 870 CE after disputes in Nishapur and Bukhara during the final years of his life.

The report of selection from 600,000 hadiths

Traditional sources state that al-Bukhari selected the Sahih from a corpus of 600,000 hadith reports. This large figure belongs to the biographical tradition and should not be treated as a modern independently verified count.

He did not include every sahih report he knew

The traditional accounts explicitly state that al-Bukhari did not aim to include every report he regarded as sahih, partly to keep the work manageable.

The question of demonstrated meeting

Later hadith theory often characterized al-Bukhari as requiring stronger evidence of direct meeting between contiguous narrators than Muslim. The precise reconstruction of each compiler’s condition is a later analytical formulation, but it reflects a real methodological distinction discussed by specialists.

Chapter headings and legal reasoning

The chapter headings of Sahih al-Bukhari frequently express legal arguments, Qurʾanic evidence or juristic conclusions and are central to understanding al-Bukhari as a jurist as well as a hadith scholar.

Why hadiths are repeated

Al-Bukhari often repeats a hadith in different chapters with different chains or selected wording in order to extract different legal, theological or interpretive points.
